Greenlaning

Hi all.

I'm very aware that a number of you out there use your vehicles for greenlaning rather than shows. Well I'm your rep on the committee, got volunteered because I do both (Mad fool, has to keep covering the scratches!). I've been laning for quite a few years. So what do you think about us perhaps having a discussion section and maybe providing advice for your local areas and perhaps getting into groups sometimes?

Would be good to hear from you, so I'm not banging on to no point!

Sounds like a great idea to me, I'm always looking for new areas to go to, either off roading or greenlaning.

I would certainly be interested in greenlaning in and around the Manchester/ Oldham area and a convoy is always a safer option

now thats dedication; laning with a sankey in tow! i thought only i was mad enough to do it. Not so good if you get stuck and can't reverse but so much fun as you need to think your routes and approaches to holes etc so much more.

Laning with the Sankey is the future ...(apart from on our Xmas trip where i got caught out with a fully loaded (cooking gear etc )Sankey ...needed a slight ....cough tow upwards ....

Tilt on the Sankey has gone now though in favour of the "proper" Sankey cover that the Mrs bought me for xmas

Greenlaning around Manchester and Oldham etc would be good for me too, there's an Austin Champ club that I sometimes tag along with around Oldham and Saddleworth, some good routes too.

I am fairly new to the Oldham & Saddleworth area and still finding my way around but would be very interested in tagging along with some other guys and the Champs would be an interesting group to get to know i am sure..

Do the champ guys have a web site or a forum at all?

Wow that was a response! Love the photos of laning with the Sankey, hardly tried it with mine. We're was that it looks great! By the way I'm based in Northants part of the land of the seasonal closures and clay but can advise on the area.

Re Oldham and saddleworth we have a couple of members in the Paek and Dukeries Club, they get around and will know the area will try and contact them.

I'll also badger about a Greenlaning discussion link.

First few were out in the peak district round Buxton/Chinley

Last ones were on our Xmas do ...heading up to a disused gold mine (we do a bit of mine exploring too ) not far from Trawsfyndd in north Wales

A clip of us (though i hadn't got the 109 at this point) in Wales Guy in the LWT sans doors/roof etc is Phil from over on OLLR ....

We spent the weekend out in North Wales and wild camped up at the lost lake ...Happy days that trip was ,though i was glad i had a roof when the rain came down

One thing I miss since moving to Scotland 20 years ago - proper greenlaning. Almost no legal off-road routes up here, pretty much everything is controlled by big estates or forestry.

The SLROC does organise "Green Road Runs" but they tend to be 30 + vehicle convoys on otherwise padlocked estate roads. Superb scenery and some long routes - 10 miles plus - but few of the "natural hazards" that you can find when picking byways off the map down south. Scenic Drive rather than greenlaning englandshire style .

Sounds like we may be able to get a nice little gathering of people in the Oldham area then...

Trouble is i am very much a stranger to the area especially when it comes to greenlanes...

I do know of the 4x4 place at whitworth but thats very much a true off road pay& play location...

anyone fancy organising a local meet sometime who knows the area better than i?

To be honest folks if you are Oldhamabad based then the best bet is the Peak district ...

Not far away and some stunning scenery to be had

Is anyone here a member of glass and could point us in the right direction? I think there are some lanes in Holmfirth etc? Is there not a good long one entering Derbyshire from the Ladybower reservoir? If there are 3 or 4 of us we should be ok in case of any mechanical upsets?
